WIP Wednesday

The semester is finally over! This one was a rough one, and after an arduous journey, my school chums and I all made it through!

Congratulations everyone! We're one semester away from graduation!

Today's WIP Wednesday is slightly different, in that it's not about crafting but about this:

 

I've been plotting this piece for ages, and decided that this winter break was the perfect time to get it started. Can't wait to get it done!

WIP Wednesday: August 7, 2013

Lots of changes are coming up soon, one of which involves moving, so I decided it's time to clean up the WIP pile. It seems I have a whole bunch of baby items on the needles, and they knit up quick so I want them done and sent off to their respective new homes.

First thing I picked out to finish is this Cutethulu:

All he needed was his body finished and stuffed, and wings added. It was a super quick job so not only am I showing off this cute and nerdy WIP, but it also became an FO:

Squee!!!

He will be sent off to his new home this week! And I'll continue rummaging through the WIP pile to see what else I can bang out.

WIP Wednesday - December 12, 2012

Holy shit that was a LOT of custom knits! But, I'm finally done! And since Mr. Social and I are currently rearranging everything in our home, I can't sew. Which means my Thurlows remain unfinished *grumble grumble*

But you know what I can do when I have a few spare minutes? I can knit! And since I've been unselfishly knitting for weeks, it's time to knit something for me!

Can you guess what that is? No, it's not a Jayne hat.

Gorramit, this is the happiest sweater I have ever knit!

Why is this the happiest sweater I ever knit? Well, that's simple. It's the brightest sweater I ever knit. You see, I tend to wear a lot of black. And more black. And sometimes even grey. In an attempt to change up my wardrobe and throw myself way out of my comfort zone, I took a bunch of leftover yarn that was supposed to be for Jayne hats and decided to use it for a sweater.

The pattern is a variation of Buttony Sweater by Katie Marcus. I've had my eye on this sweater for a while now but socks and hats always seemed to get in the way. But I decided I didn't ant a cardi, so instead I've turned it into a henley. I love that the button band is off to the side instead of down the centre. Makes it moer interesting, n'est-ce pas?

The body of this sweater went so fast. Like, I cranked it out in about 3 days fast. Sometimes I forget how fast things knit up in a bulky yarn go. I'm running dangerously low on the yellow yarn though, so I may need to get just a wee bit more to finish off the sleeves. I can't wait for this to be finished!

WIP Wednesday - October 24, 2012

Try to deny it all you want, but WINTER IS COMING.

Thankfully, there's no snow in Toronto yet (it's not even Hallowe'en!). However, all week the temps have been going up and down, and it's generally pretty damn cold when I leave my office at the end of the day. Not cold enough for a winter coat just yet, but my hands have been freezing. Of course, this means it's time for some new mitts!

This is the first of two pairs I have planned. These will be fingerless mitts but super long, so if I get around to making a cape my arms will be covered. The next pair will be full on mittens (possibly flip top, I haven't decided yet) for the winter. I'm using yet another gorgeous yarn from my stash of Nerd Girl Yarns, this time it's the True Blood colourway on her gorgeous Heart You base. Dreamily soft merino! Mmmmmmm.

WIP Wednesday - October 17, 2012

This week I'm working on another Wooly Wormhead pattern, this time it's Everglade. I've actually knit this pattern before, and was really pleased with the results.

I had tweaked the original so it would be super slouchy but i turns out that yellow is just not my colour. (I don't know what I was thinking). So, I'm making another one, but I'm unsure yet again of my colour choice...

I almost never wear green.... and I'm also wondering if the green is just too obvious with the leaf pattern.

WIP Wednesday - October 10, 2012

This week, I'm working on a hat by one of my favourite hat designers ever, Woolly Wormhead. I've been in love with her designs since I learned how to knit and have knit many over the past few years.

But Woolly is in a bit of a pickle. The artist commune where she lives part of the year is under threat, so to help raise money for lawyer fees and other administrative fees, she is donating all the proceeds from the digital sales of these three patterns to the communal pot.  The patterns are Tangled River¹, Lenina², and Retro Beanie³.

I myself purchased Tangled River and Lenina, and am thinking about getting Retro Beanie as well, I just haven't decided on that one yet. While I think it over, I'm working on Tangled River.

I'm knitting it with some Light Brown Hare March Hare in the colourway Poison Apple #1 that I've had in my stash so long that I can't remember what project I had in mind when I bought it. I love how deep and rich the red is.

Airplane knitting! And of course, a simple and familiar pattern so I don't have to fumble through my carry-on for pattern pages.

WIP Wednesday: September 19, 2012

I seem to have more WIPs than finished stuff these days.... mainly because I get too lazy to weave in ends or block stuff. But this week I'm hoping to remedy that and I'll possibly have something to show off for FO Friday :)

Lately, I've been doing a lot of catch-up for Made to Order items for the shop, but I've been scratching out some time to work on some clothing for the trip to Portugal (which I'll probably have to get FO pics of while I'm there). I've also made some time to work on a scarf for myself, to replace the scarf that I lost last year.

Seriously, perfect colour combo and CASHMERE



This scarf is where the Baana love came from, so naturally, the replacement will be the same pattern. It's a shame though, the yarn was one of a kind, so I won't get to have anything close to the original ever again... Sadsies

Anyhoo, I've picked out some faboosh sparkly yarn for the replacement, the colourway is Sexy (inspired by Doctor Who!) and from the same indie-dyer as the yarn for the original scarf, Nerd Girl Yarns.

I've actually been sitting on this yarn for quite some time, waiting for it to tell me what it wants to be, so I can't wait to be finished! I hope it'll be ready in time to be worn on colder evenings while we're away (even though I'm being told there probably won't be cold enough evenings, a girl can dream I like to be prepared).

WIP Wednesday: August 8, 2012

I recently found out that an old friend and his wife have a teacup human on the way! You know that that means? I finally have someone to knit tiny little things for!

So, of course, I have started to knit a baby sweater. As I don't know the sex of the child, I tried to pick a "gender-neutral" yarn. Now that I've taken a picture of it, I'm not so sure how "gender-neutral" it is...

I think it may be just a bit too blue. There's white and purple in there too, but I think the turquoise/blue may overpower. We shall see once I get more of the body done. In the meantime, I think I have a few more skeins of yarn that would be considered "gender-neutral" that I can use to make even more tiny items.

AND I have found the perfect card for baby shower gifts! (I actually found it ages ago, but have been patiently waiting for the perfect time to use it)

WIP Wednesday: August 1, 2012

It's Wednesday! You know that that means....it's time to show off what's in progress!

This week, I'm working on a supercoil yarn, as well as a super secret test knit. Since it's secret, I can't show off a close-up of it, but it did find it's way into this picture:

Can you tell what it is? No? Good. It will be shown off at the appropriate time.

You may be asking yourself why I'm plying the supercoil yarn on a drop spindle while my spinning wheel is sitting right there, all lonely and unused. Well, the answer is simple, the orifice on my wheel is too small for the bulkier parts of this yarn, so I'm plying it up the old fashioned way (read: the way that takes way too long).

What's on the sewing table? Well, I'm working on another dress. I have no real progress pics to post, as for now I only have it cut out, but here's a sneak peak:

I picked up this fabric a while back for a different project, but because I left it for so long, I forgot what I had originally intended it to become. So now it'll be a dress (not exactly as pictured on the pattern, I'm going to make a few changes). This is what I'm working on while I figure out what to make with the possibly granny fabric.

WIP Wednesday: July 18, 2012

Wow! I haven't done one of these in a while! Let's just dive straight in, shall we?

My current at work project (for knitting on my lunch hour) as another sweet little baby sweater.

I had lofty dreams of knitting one in colours to represent each of the houses in Harry Potter (yeah, I'm a geek), and this will be representative of Ravenclaw.

I've already got the one for Slytherin finished, I just need to get some buttons for it, so I won't be showing it off until I get that done.

On the sewing table, I won't say what it is just yet, but I'll give a little sneak peak:

This cotton is absolutely divine and I wish I had more of it! But alas, this will be the only project I get to make with it, so I guess I'll have to make it count :)

WIP Wednesday: May 9, 2012

I'm still busily working away on my "Magneto Scarf". I've made some good progress on it and am loving the pooling!

WIP Wednesday - May 2, 2012

This week has brought about some changes to my job, so I figured I should cover some familiar ground with my knitting. I'm knitting another Baana shawl (I've knit 3 of these bad boys already) using some Alina Shea Creations Sunrises yarn. The colourway was a custom dye for me, which is super cool.  It's called "Andi is Awesome" (which, I kind of am), but when I look at it I totally see Magneto!!! (who is also awesome).

Why do I get my own colourway you ask? Well, the fabulous Shayla, who is the mastermind behind Alina Shea Creations, is testing out a new dyeing technique, and she needed some samples whipped up to show off how they knit/crochet up. I volunteered to help out, and voila! My own custom colours :)

This yarn is meant to stripe, however with the linen stitch and construction of this shawl, I'm not sure if there will be stripes in it, or if it'll just be cool colour pooling. Here's what I have so far:

Stripes or no, I think this will end up a pretty cool scarf!

WIP Wednesday - April 25, 2012

My intention for this week was to give you all a sneak peak of what's on my sewing table. But me being forgetful, I forgot to take a pic last night. So instead, I give you an almost sock.

This socks is either 3 or 8 rows from being finished. I haven't quite decided how wide I want the ribbing section to be yet, and I figure I'll go with my gut once I get there.

These are destined to be socks for Mr. Social. He will be getting at least 12 pairs of knit socks from me this year, and this is pair #2. You'll notice that the colours used for him are very different than the colours I would use for socks for myself. He likes more earthy colours, while I go for the super insane, bright, and crazy colours for socks. Although, from time to time I do knit him socks that take him out of his comfort zone.

I should get knitting, I'm already behind pace by 2 pairs to be on track for 12 pairs of socks for the year... Wish me luck!

WIP Wednesday - April 4, 2012

I've got a few things on the go right now, some knitting, and finally, some sewing! I'm so happy to be back at the sewing machine again! So this week's WIP Wednesday will be a little different. I'll be showing off not one, but three WIPs! YOU'RE WELCOME

First up, the knitting. I have yet another sweater for a teacup human on the needles. I seriously can't get enough of knitting these things! They go so fast!

Next up, I've been working on two sewing projects at once. While they are very similar, they do have differences in the details. As I'm sewing them at the same time, sometimes there's some forgetfulness on my part regarding the differences between the two, so there's been some ripping out and re-sewing the last few days. But all in all, things are moving along nicely.

One of these geeky items will be off to live in Australia! HOW COOL IS THAT???

WIP Wednesday - March 28, 2012

Recently, I've been working on so many things that I haven't been in love with, so I'm really glad to be finally knitting this sweater. I don't know if it's the super bright and cheerful yarn, or the tininess of it, but it's just so happy making!

This lovely yarn is Twisty String by Younger Yarn. All her yarns are super soft and squishy, and I'm a super addict (I have a crazy amount of her stuff in my stash).

This wee sweater is just zooming along and I should be done in no time!

WIP Wednesday - March 21, 2012

Last week I had pondered finishing the WIP showcased (which I did) and knitting another one in time for St. Patrick's Day (which was this past Saturday). Well, I didn't start the hat, and I'm glad, as I wouldn't have had time to finish it due to some custom orders I had received, and it was way too warm to wear a hat (which is odd for the middle of March).

This week's WIP is actually a SIP (spin in progress). This is yarn three of four that I need to finish and submit by midnight on Saturday for the Harry Potter Knit & Crochet House Cup on Ravelry. I'm cutting it very close as I slacked on this and left myself very little time to get the final two done.

The yarn I'm working on right now takes longer to ply than a normal yarn as it is a coil yarn, and the orifice¹ on my spinning wheel is too small to fit some of the larger/chunkier coils through it, so I have to ply it on one of my drop spindles. The one I chose to use for this project is a gorgeous Yorkieslave Artworks spindle, which is appropriate as the batt I spun for this yarn is also a Yorkieslave Artworks batt.²



It's slow going, but I am seriously hoping I can get it finished tonight, so it can have it's bath and dry, and I can get the fibre for the next yarn prepped (and maybe even get started on it).

WIP Wednesday - March 14, 2012

Another Wednesday, another WIP. Seems the WIP pile is getting bigger and bigger these days. Today, I present what will eventually be a squishy and soft hat.



The colour of the yarn was hard to capture with the lighting in my office, but it's a super rich, burnt orange with flecks of black throughout. The yarn was dyed by my friend Shayla of Alina Shea Creations on her Smooshy Sheep base. This yarn is seriously the best DK weight yarn I have ever used. I finished a hat a few days ago with the same base, and loved it so much I had to start another. I can't recommend it enough!

I'm hoping to have this hat done by tomorrow, so I can knit another in kelly green to wear for St. Patrick's Day. Maybe I'm being a little too ambitious...

WIP Wednesday - March 7, 2012

I have more than a few WIPs on the go right now. For example, I'm still working on the Diamond Gansey Socks for Mr. Social, as well as the Gryffindor Scarf from last week. But I figured you wouldn't want to see the same things again.

This week's WIP is another Baana. I have made 2 of these before. One for myself, (which I loved dearly and, of course, lost somewhere) and one for Mr. Social.



To be honest, this is not an exciting knit. Linen stitch is incredibly boring. What keeps bringing me back to this pattern is how well it works with variegated yarn. I love to see how this pattern breaks up or creates pooling. It's just so different every time. The yarn I'm using is Nerd Girl Yarns Come Hither, which is a gorgeous Merino/Nylon/Cashmere blend. If you haven't had the chance to use Nerd Girl Yarns stuff yet, I highly recommend you get some right now. Go on, do it. You know you want to.
